Shockwave Therapy: Accelerate Healing and Relieve Pain
If you’re struggling with pain and restricted mobility but prefer a noninvasive method of treatment, you might consider extracorporeal pulse activation technology (EPAT)—more commonly known as shockwave therapy. This evidence-based treatment technique uses sound
waves to stimulate healing, reduce pain and inflammation, and help you move, feel, and live better.
What Is Shockwave Therapy?
Shockwave therapy delivers high-energy acoustic waves to target areas of pain and inflammation, triggering a series of biological responses that promote healing. When these pulses penetrate soft tissues, they create microtrauma at the cellular level, stimulating the body’s natural repair mechanisms and helping maximize your rehabilitation.
The EPAT device we use at Maverick Physiotherapy has been cleared by the FDA to treat acute and musculoskeletal pain and is a safe option for the vast majority of patients.
What Does Shockwave Therapy Do?
- Reduces pain and inflammation
- Boosts circulation for faster healing
- Breaks down scar tissue
- Restores mobility and increases range of motion
- Stimulates local stem cells to promote tissue regeneration and repair

Conditions Treated with Shockwave Therapy
Shockwave therapy can generally address any acute or long-term musculoskeletal pain that affects your quality of life. Some of the specific conditions include the following:
Plantar Fasciitis
A common cause of heel pain resulting from damage to the thick band of tissue connecting the heel to the toes
Tendonitis
Inflammation of a tendon, such as the Achilles, patellar, or rotator cuff, that causes pain and stiffness
Tennis / Golfer’s Elbow
Painful conditions caused by overuse of the forearm muscles, leading to inflammation in the tendons around the elbow joint
Shin Splints
Pain and tenderness along the shin bone, commonly experienced by runners and athletes due to excessive stress on the lower leg muscles.
Bursitis
Inflammation of the fluid-filled sacs that cushion joints (including the hip, knee, and shoulder joints) that causes discomfort and stiffness, especially during movement.
Calcific Tendonitis
Calcific deposits that occur in tendons that increase stiffness and pain.
What Can I Expect From Shockwave Therapy?
The process is quick, with most sessions lasting 5-10 minutes. We perform all sessions in our St Paul, MN clinic, and the procedure involves no anesthesia, no downtime, and minimal side effects. Many patients even report feeling immediate pain relief, although some do require multiple sessions, depending on the condition we’re treating.
During your session, we’ll start by applying coupling gel to the affected area, which helps boost the effects of the EPAT device. Next, we’ll run a wand over the area to deliver the sound waves to your tissue.
Shockwave therapy is safe for most people, although certain conditions, such as deep vein
thrombosis, may require special consideration. Our team can let you know for sure.
